Today I was a free agent for the morning, as Dennis had his last long training run (24k) before the full marathon. Since I was on my own for a few hours, Tracy and I decided to do brunch.
We met at Moxie's. My suggestion, since I had a great breakfast when I was there a couple weeks ago. After a leisurely meal, we decided to pop into McNally Robinson as it was right next door. I always enjoy a good prowl through the bargain books. I tend to buy most of my books from Amazon, since I'm often looking for something both highly specific and not that common. (The kind of thing that tends not to be stocked on the shelf.) But I enjoy going to actual bookstores to discover something new.
Today I found two books: The first one is Night, by Elie Wiesel. This is the author's first person account of being a prisoner in a concentration camp during the Holocaust. I don't expect it to be an easy (or even enjoyable) read but it's an important piece of history. I've read excerpts from the book but never the whole thing.
The second book I bought is much lighter fare: Sloppy Firsts by Megan McCafferty. I had heard about the Jessica Darling series but never got around to starting it. However, when I saw it on the "ultimate clearance" rack for $2.99 it seemed like fate. It's Young Adult fiction but these days that's where some of the best writing is - Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Divergent, Twilight. (I'm totally kidding about that last one.) If I like it, it means that I don't have to search for reading material for awhile - I can keep going with the series.
After the bookstore, Tracy and I parted ways. She headed over to Centre Mall for a movie and I went off to do my grocery shopping for the week. A perfectly lovely Sunday!
