I'm not sure why, but I got it into my head that I would really like a turtle necklace. I think I may have been subliminally influenced by Cougartown. On the show, one of the characters (Jules) frequently wears a gold turtle necklace. I loved the look of it.
I had a look around to see if I could find something similar. Usually Claire's is pretty good for having this kind of thing but no luck. I also couldn't find anything at Target or Wal-Mart. But when I checked the People's website - boom! They had one. A gold-plated version with crystals. It was a bit more than what I was thinking of spending but still reasonable.
In person I liked it even better than online. It's a bit smaller than what I was expecting but I actually prefer it because it's a bit daintier that way. I've worn it lots since I got it, and have gotten some wonderful compliments on it.
I was curious about the symbolism of turtles. This was one of the descriptions I found:
The turtle is a symbol of longevity and wisdom. Incredibly, sea turtles have existed on earth longer than any other vertebrate animal ~ they were here when dinosaurs evolved and became extinct, and they survived the Ice Age.
The turtle naturally withdraws and goes within when in turmoil. It carries its own protection. The turtle's whole life is one of steadfastness, effort, and patience. There is a saying, Home is where the heart is - the turtle is always at home within itself.
I like that. The idea of always finding a home within yourself, and having the resilience to carry your own sense of protection. Maybe I like turtles because they are the ultimate introverts. They are definitely my spirit animal when it comes to running - persistence over speed! At any rate, my new necklace is a reminder of some excellent virtues.
