Today Dennis was off to the run the Brain Freeze Half-Marathon. Since he was going to be out all afternoon, I decided to join mom and Tracy at a movie. I needed a little family time this week. I'm not exactly scared of the biopsy but I am worried in general. Even though I've kept everything from my mom so far (and only told Tracy a few snippets), I knew I would find it comforting just to be in the presence of family. A movie was perfect because I'm not very chatty these days.
We went to see Twelve Years a Slave at the Rainbow Cinemas. I wouldn't describe it as a great pick-me-up movie. It was hard to watch. At times, Mom couldn't even look at the screen. But it was a good movie and an important one. It deserves all the Oscar nominations it received. There is some speculation that it won't win the Oscar because Academy members might not have seen it. The subject matter is difficult. But considering slavery continues to exist all over the world, perhaps we need to see it in all its ugliness. Otherwise it's too easy to look the other way. The ability to choose for oneself is the most wonderful thing about being human. Even if we choose stupidly from time to time, there is nothing more precious than freedom.
There's a line in the movie where the main character Solomon says, "I do not let myself fall into despair". That seems like a good message. I am nervous about meeting with the doctor tomorrow and what I may find out. But falling into despair is never a good choice. You just have to face things head on and keep putting one foot forward.
